Jarett Dillard has added another honor to his spectacular sophomore season as he was named by the Associated Press second team All American for 2006. Last week, Dillard was named by the Walter Camp Foundation to its All American second team.
Dillard was again joined on the second team by Jeff Samardzija of Notre Dame. The first team receivers were Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech, who won the Biletnikoff Award last week over Dillard and Samardzija, and Dwayne Jarrett of USC.
Dillard is one of just six sophomores named to the AP first and second teams, joining Steve Slaton of West Virginia, Darren McFadden of Arkansas, James Laurinaitis of Ohio State (all first teamers) and Ray Rice of Rutgers.
The record-shattering sophomore from San Antonio did not begin the year as a member of the award's Watch List of potential candidates. But he burst upon the scene and into contention for the honor by setting school single-season marks for receptions (82) yards (1,176) and touchdown catches (20) and tying the NCAA record by catching a scoring pass in 12 consecutive games this season. His overall streak of 14 consecutive games with a TD pass is the second longest in NCAA history.
Both streaks will be on the line in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, since the NCAA recognizes bowl games for statistical purposes.
The Owls return to a full practice schedule on Wednesday as they begin preparations for the game with Troy University on December 22. The team is set to depart Houston for New Orleans next Tuesday.
