DALLAS -- Rice sophomore Diane Gu (Brown College) was named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week the league office announced from it's headquarters in Dallas on Wednesday (Nov. 8).
Gu won two individual events and anchored a pair of winning Rice relays at the Phill Hansel Duals, a six-team invitational meet held across town at the University of Houston on Nov. 3-4. Gu is a sprinter who led a 1-2 Rice finish in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She won the 50 over a field of 22 other competitors with a season-best time of 23.91. The Orlando, Fla., native also won the 100 with a season-best mark of 51.81. When not claiming the individual events, Gu served as the anchor on Rice's meet-winning 200-free relay that posted the best time in the conference so far (1:35.31). She anchored the second-best 200-medley in the league this season (1:46.66) and the Owls' meet-winning 400-free relay (3:28.41).
The C-USA honor is the second time for Gu to earn league accolades. She was also named the conference swimmer of the week as a freshman last season. The Rice swimmers will next be in action at the Indiana University Invitational on Nov. 17-19 in Bloomington, Ind. The annual meet hosted by the nationally-ranked Hoosiers is one of the country's top multi-team events in the fall season.
