HOUSTON -- The Rice swim team returns to competition with head-to-head dual meets against no less than five different opponents in the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend on Nov. 3-4 across town at the University of Houston Rec Center Natatorium. The Owls take on former Western Athletic Conference rival Nevada, the University of New Orleans, Trinity, Mesa State and meet host Houston. Start times are 5 pm Friday and 10 am on Saturday.
The two-day, multi-dual format features 17 individual swimming events, including four relays. The meet also has two springboard diving events (but Rice does not field a diving program). A unique feature of the Hansel Duals is that one team may finish the weekend action with as many as five dual meet wins added to its season results. The Owls are 1-1 in dual meets after opening the season with a win over Denver (Oct.13) and falling at home to SMU on Oct. 27.
Because the Owls do not field a diving program, the meet's points awarded for those events automatically defaults to the other teams. Rice head coach Seth Huston stated that puts an immediate sense of urgency for the Blue and Gray to race sharp and smart all meet long.
"We have an uphill battle this weekend," Huston said. "We start out down 32-0 against each team since we do not have diving. Our lineup right now is spread thin a bit more than we would like, but we will shuffle some people around since we can go four deep in all events. We will race similar to what we've done in the first two meets and hopefully have more of the same results. With the way our schedule is, we are training right through this weekend."
