The Rice swim team hosts eighth-ranked SMU in a Conference USA dual meet at 6 pm Friday (Oct. 27) at the Rice Pool. The Owls won their season-opening meet at the University of Denver two weeks ago by a score of 161-116. The Mustang swimmers enter the contest as the defending C-USA champions.
Rice junior Brittany Massengale meets the Mustangs' top performers in the distance events. Owl freshman Pam Zelnick tries to remain undefeated in the 100-yard breaststroke. Rice head coach Seth Huston stated the Owls are looking forward to the challenge of hosting one of the country's top programs.
"Some teams like to get in and race and just go all-out against a ranked team because they love the challenge, and other teams will get intimidated by them, but I think we're more of that first type of team," Huston said of his Owls. "We've got enough people who can compete at that same level and our team knows SMU is a team they need to compete against. We need to see how we match up. The meet will tell us a lot about ourselves."
Admission is free for the meet. The schedule for the C-USA dual meet features the full 14-event swim program. Friday's schedule of events is as follows:
