BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB soccer team scored three first half goals and held on for a 3-1 Conference USA win over visiting Rice Sunday afternoon on the road in Birmingham, Ala. The Owls head into their final regular season game next week against crosstown rival Houston having lost five of their last six games.
In the game's fourth minute, UAB defender Danielle Blair scored her first goal of the season off a Blazers' corner kick from Jenny Meyer on the right side. UAB stretched the margin to 2-0 with a goal in the 24th minute when Rice was given a red card on a tackle in the box. Not only did the play set the Blazers up with a penalty kick, which forward Sally Palmer converted for a score, the red card ejection put the Owls down a player for the remainder of the contest.
Rice regrouped and cut the lead with a goal. In the 28th minute Clory Martin served a long pass from the far left wing to Erin Scott high in the center of the box. The Owl freshman looked inside for a shot, but the UAB defense quickly collapsed on the scoring leader. Scott turned the other way and passed back to sophomore Christine Petric breaking free for a clear look at the goal. Petric blasted a shot that beat the keeper high and to the right side.
UAB scored for the third time in the period in the 36th minute on a goal by Jill Porto. Rice had two chances to tie in the second period. Petric hit the crossbar on a penalty kick in the 61st minute and senior Laura Barber had a header corralled by the UAB keeper after a corner kick in the 84th minute.
Rice fell to 10-5-1 on the season and 2-5-0 in league play. UAB improved to 6-10 overall and 4-4-0 in C-USA action. The Owls next face local rival Houston across town at UH on Friday, Oct. 27. Start time for the match is 7 pm at Robertson Stadium.
