Houston -
Kate Gorry won the 5000-meters by almost 27 seconds and Rice runners captured gold in two other distance races at the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet at Yeoman Fieldhouse Friday night.
Gorry, a senior who was the Conference USA cross country runner-up in the fall, clocked 17:26.79 to win, while teammates Laura Kelley and Lea Garcia placed third and fourth in 18:16.86 and 18:29.24.
Callie Wells was also an easy winner in the mile as the Owls swept the top three places. Wells dipped below five minutes, stopping the clock at 4:57.22, with Anna Reeve second at 5:02.63 and Brandi Armstrong third.
The Owls also teamed up to win the distance medley relay in 12:05.89, nine seconds ahead of Texas.
"Those were three very pleasing wins," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "It was a nice showing from our distance squad and it shows that we are pretty solid in that area."
Other top showings for Rice came from Rachel Greff, who was the top collegian in the pole vault with a clearance at 3.80/12-5.5. Former Owl Beth Spearman won the event at 4.11/13-5.75 and qualified for the USA Indoor Championships in late February.
Funmi Jimoh placed third in the long jump, spanning 5.95/19-6.25 as she prepared for her first pentathlon next week in New Mexico. Also on the field, sophomore Ulrika Hinson showed strong improvement in the shot put, tossing the iron ball 13.05/42-9.75 to place fifth.
Nina Mayes grabbed a fifth-place finish in the 60 dash, sprinting to a 7.49, and she took seventh in the 200, one spot behind teammate Desarie Walwyn.
