LINCOLN, Neb. - The Rice soccer team battled 18th-ranked Nebraska, and even had an early lead, but the Cornhuskers rallied for three unanswered goals on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Owls in the team's first road game of the season Sunday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb.
Rice got Nebraska's attention in the early going. The Owls jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 23rd minute. Freshman Anne Candee centered a long pass inside the goalkeeper's box to junior Maria Fadool. While the Husker defense closed in on Fadool, Clory Martin pulled it back and passed the ball back near the top of the 18 where Samantha Conn was already charging. Conn made a sliding kick that beat the Nebraska keeper to the right side of the goal and the Owls were in front 1-0
The Cornhuskers rebounded with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. Forward Sasha Andrews converted a pair of headers off a free kick and a corner kick. The first was in the 34th minute and the second was late in the 44th. Both were assisted by Brittany Timko and the scores snapped Rrice's streak of three-straight shut outs.
Nebraska stretched the margin to 3-1 with final goal in the second period. In the 52nd minute Selenia iacchelli headed a cross to the middle of the box off a long free kick from Aysha Jamani.
Rice (4-2-0) finished the afternoon with a total of seven shots, only three of which were on goal. Nebraska (4-2-0) posted 18 shots with a total of six on goal. The corner kicks were even at six apiece.
The Owls next face North Texas on the road in Denton on Sept. 16. Rice then meets the University of Texas on the road in Austin on Sept. 18.
