Highlighted by Diane Gu's time of 23.24 in the 50-yard freestyle, Rice's 2005-06 swim signees closed out their respective prep careers with some of the top times in the United States for graduating high school seniors.
In it's annual summer wrap up of the top high school performers in the country (a list including both public and private schools), the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) listed four incoming Owl recruits among the nation's top seniors in their respective events. Diane Gu, a signee from Lake Mary High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., posted the country's second-fastest time in the 50-freestyle among the graduating class of 2005. She also had the 14th-fastest time in the 100 (51.29) and won the 50-free at the Speedo Sectionals in Florida in July.
Another incoming sprinter, Carlyann Voss Miller of Oklahoma City, recorded the 18th-fastest senior time in the country in 50-free. Voss Miller closed out her prep career ranked 23rd in the U.S. in the 100-free.
Distance swimmer Caitlin Warner of Clearwater, Fla., was 12th in the 500-free and Top 30 performer in the 200. Local standout Keri Hyde of Memorial High School in Houston was 20th in the country in the 100-backstroke. She was also 27th in the 100-butterfly.
"We knew when we started the recruiting process we wanted to identify the best high school student-athletes in the country," said the Owls' head swim coach Seth Huston, now starting his fourth season at the helm of the program. "This proves we were on the right track and we want to continue bringing in the best to Rice.
"I'm getting excited to hurry up and start the season," Huston added. "Our newcomers and returning letterwinners will be a good mix. We're going to be pretty fast in a lot of events."
Rice swimming opens the 2005-06 season on October 14 in Austin in a double-dual meet against the University of Texas and the University of Houston.
