Women's Tennis: TCU Stops Rice, 6-1

FORT WORTH ? Freshman Christine Dao posted Rice?s lone win as the 17th-ranked Texas Christian women?s tennis team defeated number-44 Rice, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Rice opened with a loss at the top singles spot before the Owls? number two team of Tracie Chong and Kimberley Patenaude defeated Helena Besovic and Kewa Nichols 8-5. The win improved the pair to 4-0 on the dual match season. Texas Christian?s Paige Brown and Karla Mancinas clinched the doubles point, as the Owls readied for a tough singles play.

Texas Christian proved to be too much for Rice, winning the first five singles matches, with two needing a super tie breaker. Dao helped the Owls avoid a Horned Frog sweep with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) victory over Gloriann Lopez. The loss gives Rice a 12-6 record this spring.

?I think TCU played extremely well,? said head coach Roger White. ?We had our opportunities, but, unfortunately, weren?t able to convert. Hopefully we?ll get a chance to face them again and capitalize on our opportunities then.?

Up next for Rice is a match with Western Athletic Conference foe Southern Methodist, Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in Dallas. The Owls return home to the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium April 14 when they host Texas-El Paso and Texas-San Antonio.
