Women's Basketball: Lady Owls Pounce Nevada, 75-49
2/17/2005 HOUSTON ? Three Lady Owls scored in double figures, led by 17 points from Michelle Woods, as Rice dropped Nevada 75-49 Thursday night in Western Athletic Conference action at Autry Court.
Woods, Lauren Neaves, and Krystal Frazier all scored in double-digits, helping Rice (16-8, 9-4 WAC) shoot 45 percent from the field for its fourth-straight win.
The Lady Owls opened up a five point lead in the first half, but Nevada came back to take the lead off a Traci Graham layup with 10:50 remaining. Rice then took control of the game and never looked back. The Lady Owls scored the next three baskets, eventually increasing their lead to 11 with less than four minutes remaining. Rice enjoyed a 10-point lead at the half, 33-23.
Woods had nine of her team-high 17 points at the break as the Lady Owls shot 41 percent in the first 20 minutes.
Rice opened the second-half on a 9-0 run to take a 19-point lead with 17:18 remaining. The Lady Owls outscored Nevada 42-26 in the second half behind 50 percent shooting. Nevada was unable to cut Rice?s lead to single digits, and the Lady Owls led by as much as 25.
For the game, Rice shot 45 percent (27-60) and out-rebounded the Wolf Pack by 10, 44-34. Woods connected on seven-of-11 from the field, including a perfect two-of-two from long range. Neaves had 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and is now just seven blocks away from tying the Rice record of 142. Frazier finished the night with 11 points.
April Bankston led the Pack with 12 points off the bench.
Up next for Rice is Fresno State. The Lady Owls will host the Bulldogs Saturday night at 7 pm, following the Rice men versus Murray State ESPN Bracket Buster game.
