Owls Strong on First Day of SDSU Classic

SAN DIEGO - All four Rice doubles teams advanced as well as three individuals in singles as the Owls opened play at the San Diego State Fall Tennis Classic on Friday in San Diego, Calif.
In the Red doubles flight, senior Blair DiSesa and freshman Alanna Rodgers held off New Mexico's Scott and Abou-Zekry for an 8-6 quarterfinal win. Senior Madeja Egic and sophomore Kimberley Patenaude dominated the host Aztecs' Nielsen and Hauerlandova in an 8-2 victory. Both Owl duos open Saturday's action in the doubles semifinals.
After a first-round bye in Black doubles, sophomores Christine Dao and Dominique Karas won a tight battle with the Lobos' Bonner and Davis to move into the semifinals. Senior Amy Cao and freshman Emily Braid scored an 8-5 opening-round victory against Long Beach State's Weeks and Katayama to move into the quarterfinals.
DiSesa also advanced to the semifinals in Red singles. She swept the Beach's Carla Rocha 6-2, 6-2 after a first-round bye. Egic and Patenaude advanced to the semifinals in Gold singles. Patenaude swept Katayama 6-4, 6-0, then held off Fresno State's Alina Mihailescu early for a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win. Egic was solid in a pair of victories, defeating Emmanuel Tabatruong of LBSU 6-0, 6-4 and Maria Sotirchos of UNM 6-4, 6-2.
