DALLAS - Rice sophomore Brittany Massnegale was one of two distance specialists to share the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week honor for Nov. 15-21, the league office announced on Tuesday. Massengale and SMU's Flavia Rigamonti shared the honor after posting the top two C-USA times this season in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Massengale won the mile over a field of 28 competitors at the Georgia Tech Invitational last the weekend in Atlanta. Her time of 16:40.50 provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships in the spring. The Rice standout from Alma, Ark., was also second in the 500-freestyle at the meet (4:54.30) and she was a member of the Owls' 800-freestyle relay team that finished second among 13 teams with a time of 7:34.11.
Rigamonti won the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle with NCAA automatic qualifying times of 4:42.76 and 15:53.15, respectively. Houston's Tania Cagnotto was named the C-USA diver of the week. The Owls' next swim meet is against regional rival Texas A&M on Dec. 3. Start time for the showdown with the Aggies is 3 pm in College Station.
