ORLANDO, Fla. - Rice was looking to knock-off the first place team in the Conference USA women's soccer standings in back-to-back games, but the Owls fell victim to three unanswered goals by the University of Central Florida Friday evening at the UCF Soccer Stadium in Orlando.
After defeating the previous first place team, UTEP, at home a week ago the Owls were on the road Friday to meet a UCF team that shares the C-USA top spot with SMU. The Knights held their position by scoring a pair of goals in the first half then added a final score in the second half on the way to a 3-0 final. Rice, 9-6-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in league play, saw its unbeaten streak snapped at four games.
UCF senior forward Roberta Pelarigo opened the scoring in the ninth minute. She punched a shot off her back foot from 10 feet in front of the goal for her 11th goal of the season. The Owls countered with shots on-goal by Caitlin Robbins and Ashley Lucas, and the team had a total of six for the half. In the 42nd minute UCF's Jessalyn Withers made a long throw in from the attacking third and found Erin Hopkins outside the 18 yard line. Hopkins settled and fired a shot that found the back of the net on the right side to make it a 2-0 game.
The Knights added a final score in the 54th minute when Hanna Wilde converted a pass from Jennifer Montgomery for a goal. The Owls took more shots than UCF in the second period, 7-6, but only two were on-goal. The Knights improved to 10-9-0 overall and C-USA co-leading 7-1-0 record in conference.
Rice next faces Southern Miss Sunday on the road in Hattiesburgh. The noon game is the Owls' last regular season contest before hosting the C-USA Tournament on Nov. 2-6. The top eight C-USA teams participate in the league's championship tournament at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
