COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior Blair DiSesa and freshman Alanna Rodgers lost a close 9-7 battle in their Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships doubles semifinals match on Tuesday at College Station.
The Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against TCU's tandem of Helena Besovic and Anna Sydorska. The Horned Frogs fought back to tie the score at 3-3, then the duos battled back and forth to a 7-7 tie. TCU held serve at 8-7 then broke Rice's serve for 9-7 win.
"In the eight years I've been at Rice, this tournament was the best team performance I've seen," noted head coach Roger White. "It was very exciting and leaves us with a lot of energy to take into the spring season. With today's doubles semifinals, having two main draw singles quarterfinalists, plus the depth of performance in all the other draws, this is simply the best team performance we've had."
Previously in the regional championships, DiSesa and sophomore Dominique Karas advanced to the main draw singles quarterfinals. Newcomer Tiffany Lee made it to the finals of her singles consolation draw, and senior Medeja Egic and sophomore Kimberley Patenaude advanced to the finals of their doubles consolation bracket, but the Owls defaulted both matches in order to attend class. In the main singles back draw, sophomore Christine Dao advanced to the semifinals.
Complete brackets are available here. The Owls close out the fall season at the San Diego State Fall Tennis Classic, Nov. 4-6.
