HOUSTON - The Rice volleyball team fell to Conference USA leader Marshall 30-15, 31-29, 30-25 on Sunday afternoon at Autry Court.
Senior Olaya Pazo led the Owls with 13 kills and 14 digs. Junior Tessa Kuykendall added 12 kills while freshman Karyn Morgan chipped in 10.
The Thundering Herd jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead to open game one. Rice responded with four-straight points to close the gap to just three points, but Marshall fired right back to take control of the frame.
In game two, the Owls grabbed the early momentum with three kills from Kuykendall to storm out to a 6-0 lead. Rice held its biggest lead of the frame, 19-11, when Marshall rallied for a 10-2 run to knot the score at 21. The Owls regained the lead with three-straight points, but the Herd stayed close and took advantage of three Rice miscues down the stretch to take the game.
The momentum kept swinging in game three. After a pair of ties to open play, Marshall took an early 8-4 lead. Rice rebounded to post a 9-2 run and grab a 13-10 lead. The teams traded kills, then the Herd put together an 11-3 rally to retake the advantage at 21-17. Marshall built its lead to seven at 28-21 before Pazo sparked a late Rice rally with three-straight kills and freshmen Morgan and Jessica Holderness teamed for a block. It wasn't enough though, as the Herd came out of their timeout to score a pair of kills to win the match.
The loss was the third in a row for the Owls as they fall to 13-7 on the year and 4-5 in C-USA. Rice continues its current home stand on Friday, hosting UTEP at 7 pm.
