DALLAS - Rice sophomore Amy Halsey has been named the first Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for the 2005-06 season the league office announced on Wednesday (Oct. 19).
Halsey, a standout from Cinco Rach High School in Katy, won two events last week to pace the Rice swimmers to a 67-44 C-USA dual meet win over crosstown and league rival Houston in the season-opening meet for both teams on Oct. 14. Halsey won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.39 then came back four events later to win the 200-backstroke with a mark of 2:04.06. Halsey also swam the backstroke leg on the Owls' winning 200-yard medley relay. On Saturday she participated in the Lake Travis Relay, an open-water multi-team non-NCAA event covering a 12 mile course.
Halsey and the Owls next face the University of North Texas on Sunday, Oct. 23, in the swim team's home-opener. Start time for the dual meet at the Rice pool is slated for 10 am.
Rice was originally scheduled to host the University of New Orleans in the team's inaugural home meet. The Privateers however had to withdraw from the competition due to complications caused by Hurricane Katrina.
