Not only did the Rice swim team part participate in the second annual Lake Travis relays in Austin on Saturday (Oct. 15), the Owls took the unique aquatics event by storm.
The Lake Travis relay in an open-water race that covers the better part of 12 miles, starting at the Mansfield Dam and ending at Johnny Fins Restaurant & Bar in Hurst Harbor. The Rice "A" relay of Caitlin Warner, Carey Hain, Amy Halsey, Andrea Hurn, Meg Brown and Jennifer Hill placed first among a field of 24 teams. The Owls' "A" team covered the course in three hours 54 minutes and 19 seconds, a full 31 seconds ahead of second place.
The Rice "B" relay of Carly Miller, Keri Hyde, Jenni Whitcomb, Diane Gu, Laura Healey and Hannah Blakeley finished fourth overall with a time of 4:29.17.
Because Rice head coach Seth Huston wouldn't do ask the team to do anything that he wouldn't do himself, he joined in to form a third "mixed" Rice entry consisting of himself, assistant coach Greg Kristoff, Rice masters swimmer Erick Huerta, along with remaining varsity team members Natalie Kirchhoff, Anna Dogger and Skylar Craig. Huston's team placed third overall with a time of 4:24.48.
The event managed the dual purpose of keeping the Owls in a competitive swim-training mode, while breaking the routine by giving the student-athletes something to experience other than a black line at the bottom of a pool. With the break in the routine completed, the Owls now get back to NCAA Division I action.
After a season-opening 67-44 win over Houston last week, the Owls next host regional rival North Texas at the Rice pool on Sunday (Oct. 23). The meet is scheduled to start at 10 am.
