Women's Basketball: Woods Leads Rice Past Nevada, 83-74
1/22/2005 RENO, Nev. ? Led by 19 points from Michelle Woods, the Rice women?s basketball team won its second-straight road game, and its fifth-straight over the Wolf Pack, with an 83-74 victory at Nevada, Saturday.
Woods was one of four Lady Owls to score double figures, as Rice (11-7, 4-3 WAC) reached the 80-point mark for the first time this season. Woods was four-of-five in the first half, including a perfect two-of-two from long range, to lead the Lady Owls with 10 points in the first period.
After the two teams traded baskets to open the game, Woods? trey with 14:42 remaining in the first sparked a Rice 9-2 run to push the Rice lead to eight. That lead would increase to 14 before the half was over, with Rice owning a 46-33 lead at the break. The Lady Owls? 46 points was the most first-half points Rice has scored this season. Rice shot 51 percent in the first 20 minutes, and was four-of-five (80 percent) from long range.
After Nevada (5-13, 1-7 WAC) scored four-consecutive points to open the second period, Woods answered with seven of Rice?s first nine points. Rice remained in control the rest of the game, increasing its lead to as much as 19 with 7:38 to play. Krystal Frazier scored eight of her 14 points in the second period, and dished out three of her four assists in the second half.
In addition to Woods? and Frazier?s double-digit scoring, Amber Cunningham dropped in a career-best 13 points, going a perfect five-of-five from the field, including three-of-three from long range. Lauren Neaves added 13 and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Rice returns home this week to close out the first half of Western Athletic Conference play. The Lady Owls will play host to Hawaii on Thursday and San Jose State on Saturday.
