In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of senior Kim Maher and juniors Katie Hermann, Katie Scholl and Elizabeth Williams unofficially broke the pool record with a time of 7:44.81. The record was set by Rice's Carrie Covington, Ginny Farmer, Erika Bowlin and Cori Miller on Nov. 11, 1994 with a time of 7:44.88, so look for this record to fall during one of the Owls' four home meets this season.
In the most closely-contested event of the day, senior Jada Sanders found the wall just five-hundreths of a second ahead of freshman Elaine Lee in the 200 fly. Sanders clocked a time of 2:08.38, while Lee finished at 2:08.43.
Williams, the school record holder in the 200 breast, turned in a time of 2:21.32 in the event and a team-best time of 2:08.96 in the 200 individual medley. Freshman Toni Ciffolilli of Australia also made a strong debut in the two events.
The two squads tied 30-30 with the Gray team finishing first in four events and the Blue team taking three.
The Owls begin the season with meets at North Carolina on Oct. 27 and North Carolina State on Oct. 28. The team will host its first meet, the Continental Airlines Classic, on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m., followed by the Rice Invitational on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m.
