Women's Swimming: Rice Victorious at San Diego Invitational

Sophomore April Martin set the standard for the Owls with individual victories in three events and anchoring the winning 400-yard freestyle-relay team. In the 200-yard fly, Martin edged San Jose State's Charlotte Pierce by 0.09 seconds, finishing in 2:10.04. Junior Jen Lushao was third with the mark of 2:10.34. Martin posted another close victory in the 100-yard backstroke with the time of 1:00.68, just 0.03 ahead of Heidi Hausknecht of Utah. In the 200-yard back, Martin had a more comfortable margin of victory, posting a 2:07.05, more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The 400-free relay was one of two relays won by the Owls. Martin, junior Kim Maher, and sophomores Katie Hermann and Rachel Armstrong joined forces to win the 400-free relay in 3:40.03. Maher and Armstrong also teamed with senior Liz Corneliuson and sophomore Katie Scholl to win the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:57.13.
Corneliuson also won the 200-yard free, finishing in 1:58.43 to edge Armstrong by 0.5 seconds. Rice took five of the top-seven spots in the event. Scholl was the Owls' other individual winner, finishing first in the 500-yard free with the time of 5:11.74.
Host San Diego was second at the meet, finishing with 678.5 points, while Utah was third with 595.5 points. Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State was fourth with 499 points.
Rice returns home to compete at Houston in a three-way meet with the host Cougars and New Mexico State on Jan. 15.
