Against the fifth-ranked Bears, the Owls had their first experience in a short-meter pool, which is the distance that will be used in this year's NCAA championships. Teams typically compete in pools 25 yards in length. Cal collected victories in 13 of the 14 events in the 25-meter dual meet.
The Owls' lone win came from Kathryn Scholl who captured the 800-meter freestyle in 56.75 seconds, while April Martin finished second in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:05.30, and third in the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:04.10.
At San Jose State, the Spartans defeated the Owls by a 25-point margin after earning 26 points from the diving events. Rice does not compete in diving.
The Owls won seven of 15 events vs. SJSU, including the 400-yard medley relay, which Rice finished in a season-best 3:57.05. Scholl finished first in the 1,000 free, posting a time of 10:23.89, and in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.50. Martin also swam personal-best marks, winning the 100- and the 200-yard backstroke events, in times of 58.66 and 2:05.56, respectively. Mandy Mularz took first in the 50 free with a season-best time of 24.38, and Elizabeth Williams captured the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:25.72.
The Owls will host their first home meets of the year this weekend at the Rice Pool. The Owls host TCU Friday at 4pm and North Texas Saturday at 1 pm.
