Since then, Rice has won five straight on artificial turf.
"It's just a little bit mentally slower after five weeks on our turf, because we have the finest artificial turf in the country," said coach Ken Hatfield following Tuesday's workout. "The grass may be a little bit slower, but it's also a little bit softer.
"Timing is a little bit different on grass, but that's why we practice on it all week. Once we're out here, we adjust back to it."
Like all Tuesday practices, part of the workout was devoted to some new wrinkles in the Rice offense. "Tuesdays usually are rough practices," allowed Hatfield. "You get some new ideas on film, and you find that some of them are good and some aren't so good. They look good on the board, then all of a sudden they don't look so good out here."
Rice (5-3, 4-0) will be going for its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon (2 pm CDT) against the Mustangs (1-5, 1-2). The game will be SMU's final Western Athletic Conference contest in the Cotton Bowl prior to its move into the new Ford Stadium on campus in 2000.
