Volleyball: Owls Capture Conference Win Over Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. The Rice volleyball team captured its first conference win of the season Saturday night, defeating Tulsa 8-15, 15-3, 15-12, 15-13.
Kelly Smith led the Owls, launching 23 kills and 12 digs, accompanied by Klara Zelinka who notched 18 kills and 19 digs. Briana Cook added the defensive spark for the Owls, knocking down 12 blocks, placing her at fourth on the Rice single match record chart. Alison Broadfoot recorded a career-high seven blocks, to add to the team total of 14. Mariel Davenport Pollock and Soleil Thon put up 28 and 23 assists, respectively.
For the Golden Hurricane, Juliet Klemm and Kristien Van Lierop each collected 22 kills. Van Lierop added 25 digs, and Klemm swatted seven blocks. Shannon Smith quarterbacked Tulsa with 54 assists.
Rice improves its record to 9-14 overall and 1-5 in the WAC, while Tulsa falls to 8-10 and 2-5 in the conference.
The Owls will continue their way through the WAC when they take on SMU Thursday at 7:40 pm at Autry Court.
