A native of Scott City, Kan., McGonagle became a part of the Rice Sports Medicine staff as head football athletic trainer in August of 2012. He oversees a staff of four full-time assistant trainers and three students. He works in conjunction with one of the nation's most respected staffs of physicians to assure the finest medical care for the Rice student-athlete.
McGonagle's extensive experience includes 17 seasons as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University Of Miami (FL) (1995-2012) and 13 seasons as Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Tulsa (1982-1995), one year as the head athletic trainer at Crowley (Texas) High School (1981-82) and one year as head athletic trainer at Sahuarita High School (1980-81). While in Miami Scott participated in 12 bowl games, played for two National Championship games and winning the 2001 National Championship in the Rose Bowl with the football team.
McGonagle began his collegiate athletics career as a student trainer at the University of Kansas from 1977 to 1980. During that time, McGonagle worked as a student athletic trainer for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1978, 1979 and 1981 seasons.
He received his bachelor of science from the University of Kansas in 1980. He later added a master's of science from the University of Arizona in 1981.
McGonagle and his wife, Lynette, have a son, Matthew and a daughter, Megan who is married to Brandon. Matthew and his wife Kelli have four young daughters.
