Kyle DeWeen joined the Owls staff in the spring of 2022 as a graduate assistant working with the special teams.
DeWeen came to Rice after beginning his coaching career at HBU as the special teams quality control coach in 2021, producing a pair of first-team, All-Southland performers in kicker Gino Garcia and punter Brady Buell. Garcia ranked fifth nationally, converting 9/10 field goals with a long kick of 59 yards. Buell averaged 42.37 yards per punt and was a semifinalist for FCS Punter of the Year, highlighted by a school-record 50.9 average on nine punts vs. New Mexico.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, DeWeen was a two-year starter as a punter at Buffalo in 2016-17 after walking on from Erie Community College. He averaged 40.1 yards on 128 career punts, which ranks second in history at Buffalo, and ranks seventh on the season chart with 72 punts and a 40.61 average.
