HOUSTON – Rice Athletics and the Office of Academic Advising jointly hosted the 40th Annual Scholar Athlete Celebration on March 5 at the R Room at Rice Stadium to honor both the newest class of scholar-athlete award winners and Julie Griswold, who created the dinner in 1987 and is retiring after 40 years of advising Rice student-athletes.
Rice Vice President and Director of Athletics Tommy McClellend announced that the new name for the annual celebration will be the Julie Griswold Scholar-Athlete Banquet.
The award winners were chosen based on character and accomplishment in school and in their sport.
The Rice University Scholar Athletes are selected from a pool of Honor Athletes (students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher over at least five semesters at Rice). Each varsity team may honor up to three roster members with the title of Scholar Athlete, and awardees are determined by the OAAA (Office of Academic Advising for Athletes) in conjunction with the Athletics Department coaching staff. In addition, the dinner also honors the senior honor athletes for each sport.
