Admission is free for Friday's 4 PM tilt
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls volleyball squad will conclude its spring season with a home match featuring its cross-town rival, the Houston Cougars. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, and admission is free for all fans.
Rice concludes an exciting spring schedule that has seen the team take on several Power Four teams from the state of Texas, including TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Baylor. Most recently, Rice earned a victory over the Bears to finish the doubleheader in Waco.
Houston, like Rice, has played a strong spring slate, including facing Texas and Tulane in the F.A.S.T. Tournament, as well as last year's Sun Belt champion Texas State in San Marcos.
The match format will see the teams play four sets against each other, regardless of how many wins either team takes. The match will not go over two hours. Standard rules will apply for the match, with teams needing either 25 points or two more points than the other starting at 24 to claim a set.
The last time Rice and Houston faced off was in an exhibition match just before the fall season began. In that match, the Owls claimed a 3-2 victory over the Cougars in the Fertitta Center to unofficially open the 2024 campaign.
Rice looks to improve from a 19-8 campaign from a year ago, where the Owls earned several strong victories, including four wins over conference champions (Wichita State twice, UT Arlington, Texas State). The Owls featured two first team all-conference players in Samarah Hill and Lademi Ogunlana, as well as a unanimous all-freshman team and second team all-conference pick in Savannah Skopal. Rice surged to an RPI of 39 and led the American in Kills Per Set (14.02) and featured the AAC leader in hitting percentage in Ogunlana (.395).
There will be no broadcast or live stats for the match. A reminder that admission is free, so if you want to see your Rice Owls in action this spring, this is your final chance to do so!
