IRVING – Following a tremendous season debut, Mckyla Van der Westhuizen claimed the first conference honor of the outdoor season after being named the American Athletic Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
"Amazing performance by Mckyla in the opening meet of the year," said women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan. "A lifetime best in her first meet of the year is phenomenal. We've been seeing it in practice, so its great that it was manifested in a meet. Mckyla is the epitome of a great student-athlete."
Van der Westhuizen opened her outdoor campaign with a personal best throw of 60.29m (197-09) at the Victor Lopez Classic. Her throw broke the AAC record for javelin.
Her mark is the second-best throw in school history, a mere 0.28m off the school record, and is the third-best in the NCAA currently.
Rice will be back in action this weekend at the Tom Tellez invite at UH.
