
Swim and Dive Primed for AAC Championship

HOUSTON – The Rice Owls swim and dive teams head north to Dallas, Texas, to take part in the American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship, beginning on Wednesday, February 19, and spanning to Saturday, February 22. The championship will take place at The Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on the campus of SMU.
Wednesday will see swimmers and divers compete in finals competition only, starting at 5 p.m. Events on Wednesday include the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team diving event, and the 800 Yard Freestyle, an event where Rice's team posted a season-best a year ago.
Thursday will be the first full day of action, with preliminary events beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Competitors will take part in the 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 IM, 50 Yard Freestyle, 1-Meter Dive, and the 200 Yard Freestyle, which will only be in the finals.
Action will continue Friday at the same times, where competitors will take part in the 400 IM, 100 Yard Butterfly, 200 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke, 100 Yard Backstroke, 3-Meter Diving, and the 400 Yard Medley Relay.
Action concludes on Saturday, where the preliminaries start at 10:30 a.m., but the finals move up to 5 p.m. Competitors will take part in the 200 Yard Backstroke, 100 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Breaststroke, 200 Yard Butterfly, and Platform Diving, with the 1650 Yard Freestyle and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay being finals-only events.
Rice was voted as the pre-championship favorite, as voted on by other coaches around the league. Rice received four of five first place votes, earning 24 total points in the poll. Florida International was the other team to earn first place votes, earning two of five possible votes. A full list of the poll can be found below.
Rice won a total of six events last year but returns three event champions. Amelia Kane was the champion in the 500 Free last season, Arielle Hayon won the 100 Fly a year ago, and Ella Dyson was named the 1650 Free champion last season. Imogen Meers won the 50 Free, 100 Back, and 100 Free a year ago.
