Over 65 years of service to Rice Athletics
Houston- Rice Vice President and Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland announced on Monday that three longtime members of the Athletics Department have informed him of their plans to retire.
Associate Director / Academic Advising for Athletics Julie Griswold, Executive Senior Associate AD / SWA Stacy Mosely, and Associate Athletic Director – Sports Medicine & Performance Dean Miller, who have combined for over 66 years of service to Owls' student-athletes, will leave the department in early 2026.
"Julie, Stacy, and Dean represent the very best of Rice Athletics. Their impact on this department-and more importantly, on generations of Rice student-athletes—cannot be measured," McClelland stated. "Each of them has shaped our culture, elevated our standards, and poured their hearts into the success and well-being of our students, coaches, and staff. We are profoundly grateful for their decades of service, leadership, and dedication to the Owl family. While we will miss them dearly, we celebrate their extraordinary legacies and wish them nothing but joy in this next chapter. Rice Athletics is better because of them."
Griswold has monitored the academic progress of Rice student-athletes for nearly four decades, originally coming to Rice in the fall of 1986 after earning her master's degree in higher education student affairs/counseling from Indiana University. From a department of one, Rice's Academic Advising team eventually grew to a staff of four in addition to countless fellow students who provided tutoring services. More than 100 Owls have earned Academic All-American honors in addition to thousands of conference and sport-specific accolades. In 2002, Rice won the USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Award for the Highest Overall Student Athlete Graduation Rate in Division I-A, and Griswold was honored that same year by the Rice Board of Trustees. The Owls have consistently ranked in the Top 10 among FBS-level universities in the NCAA's annual graduation success tabulations. When the department moved into the new Robert E. and Elizabeth W. Bixby Academic Center in the fall of 2008, the allocated space for awards was quickly overwhelmed by the Owls' yearly output. She was honored by the Student Athletes and the Student Athletic Advisory Committee with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and by Rice Athletics with the Honorary R Award in 2019 for her long and meritorious service.
"I am amazingly blessed to have been able to live and work with administrators, faculty, coaches, support staff, students, and the Rice community all these years," Griswold said. "It has been my great privilege to walk alongside such incredible students during their years at Rice. Having the opportunity to work with such great people is more than anyone could ever hope for when setting out on their career path."
Miller joined the Owls in the fall of 2009 as the athletic trainer for the Owls' men's basketball team. He was named Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer in 2017 and currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and Performance. Miller initiated the direction for the 'WiseMetrics' Sports Science program, the Performance Nutrition Center, the Medical Services system, the collaboration with Houston Methodist for the Center for Human Performance, and, most recently, established the on-site Mental Health and Sports Psychology program. He served as the Chair of the Sports Medicine Directors of Conference USA and represented Rice Athletics as the Co-Chair of the Conference USA COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee. Additionally, he serves on the Intercollegiate Sports Medicine Committee of the National Athletic Trainers Association.
"It has been a cherished privilege to serve the Rice University Student Athletes, particularly with such incredible administrative support," Miller said. "I want to thank Tommy McClelland, Eric George, Stacy Mosely and the coaching staffs for their support and guidance for the entire Athletic department. Lastly, my largest shout-out to the amazing teams and staff of each unit. I will certainly enjoy thanking each of them personally for their outstanding performances and friendships."
Mosely came to Rice in the fall of 2011 from Oakland University, assuming the role of senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator. During her service to Rice, she has overseen the Office of Academic Advising, further enhancing the Owls' standing as one of the top programs in the country in NCAA and Federal graduation statistics. She oversaw the enhancement of Rice's student-athlete development office (SOAR), which has a 92% job placement rate for graduating seniors and the development and implementation of the four-year Flight Plan serving the personal and professional development of the Owls' student-athletes. Mosely created and directed Rice's Consultation & Assessment Team (CAT), which served the mental health and wellness needs of student-athletes. She has served as the liaison to Rice University's Athletic Council, Office of Admissions, and Student Judicial Programs. As Rice's SWA, she has served as the university's Deputy Title IX Coordinator. She was a founding member of the Owl In Task Force aimed at education, policy, and programming for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the athletics department. Mosely served as the sport administrator for nine programs (women's basketball, men's and women's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's soccer, men's cross country and track & field, women's track & field, and swimming & diving).
"It has been a blessing and an honor to spend my entire 30+ year career in college athletics and higher education," Mosely stated. "It has brought me immense pleasure and fulfillment working with student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. I find that now is the time for a new chapter in my life, and I can't thank Rice enough for what it has done for my family and me. Spending the past 14 years growing Rice Athletics and supporting our amazing student-athletes has been a wonderful endeavor. Thank you to two people in particular who believed in me and taught me so much about this business: Tommy McClelland, Vice President and Director of Athletics, and Joe Karlgaard, former Rice Athletic Director. Rice Athletics' future is bright, and I can't wait to see it soar."
