Eric George was named Rice’s interim Director of Athletics on August 5, 2026.
George came to Rice in December 2023 as the Assistant Vice President & Deputy Athletic Director. In this role, he serves as the chief operating officer, managing the department's day-to-day operations and overseeing the business office, Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) operations, facilities and events, capital projects, sports medicine, and sports performance areas. George represents the Athletic Department on several university committees and is the sport administrator for the football and men’s golf programs.
George previously spent nearly four years at Mississippi State University, where he served as the Deputy AD/CFO, and the four and a half years before that at Clemson University, where he was the Associate Athletic Director/CFO during the most successful stretch in the department’s history. He began his career in college athletics as the Assistant Business Manager at the University of Texas in 2013. George began his professional career in public accounting for 2 years as an international tax consultant at Deloitte in Dallas, where he earned his CPA license.
George serves on the NCAA D1 Football Rules Committee and the NCAA Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports Committee. He was tabbed as a Top 100 Rising/Future AD by Silver Waves Media in 2026, the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) Manager of the Year in 2023, and the On3 Rising Star List for College Athletic Administrators in 2022. He is also a 2020 graduate of the Sports Management Institute.
A native of College Station, Texas, George graduated with honors from Texas A&M in 2010 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting) and a Master of Science in Accounting. He was a member of the Texas A&M football team from 2005-2006. George is married to Lauren, and the two have two daughters – Annabelle and Harper.
