Rice Pair Stuns No. 1 Seed to Advance to Semifinals

SAN DIEGO – Rice's duo of Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro upset the No. 1 seed to advance to the semifinals at the ITA Conference Masters on Friday.
The Owls' No. 5-seeded pair received a first-round bye before opening play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over North Alabama. Kuzmenok and Navarro then battled back after dropping the first set against top-seeded Pepperdine, taking the second 6-2 and winning the decisive third-set tiebreaker 10-8.
Rice will face the No. 4-seeded team of Oscar Martinez and Martin Del Puerto from East Tennessee State in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
