- This is the 13th meeting between the two schools, the last three as members of the American Conference.
- The schools met for eight consecutive years (1 non-conference and seven in C-USA) before the 2020 game was canceled due to COVID-19-related issues.
- The teams are meeting for the fifth straight year, which matches series with Houston and Charlotte as the longest active series for Rice.
- UTSA leads the series 8-4 (7-2 in C-USA, 1-1 in The American, 0-1 non-conference) and has won the last five in the Alamodome since Rice won the first meeting in San Antonio 27-20 in 2013.
- The win in 2013 was the initial meeting as members of the same conference. Later that season, UTSA's 21-13 win at North Texas broke a tie between Rice and UNT and allowed Rice to capture the C-USA West and advance to the C-USA Championship game where the Owls defeated Marshall 41-24.
- Rice won the first three and UTSA the next eight before the Owls snapped the streak, winning 29-27 last year on an18-yard TD pass from EJ Warner to Matt Sykes with :04 left.
