AAC play begins at Tulane on Friday
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Rice Owls volleyball team (5-4) fell 3-1 to 23rd-ranked TCU (8-2) to wrap up the Horned Frog Invitational in Forth Worth on Saturday evening.
"I'm very proud of how our team came out so focused in the first set," head coach Genny Volpe said. "Taking that set was important and showed what we are capable of doing. TCU is a really good team and we were toe-to-toe with them for a lot of the match, which is very promising. We just need to clean up some things and show more consistency."
"Overall, we are excited to start conference after having such a challenging non conference slate."
Cindy Tchouangwa finished the night as the leader in kills for the Owls, posting 13 in 30 attempts. Samarah Hill followed that with 12 and Katrina Jensen had 11, rounding out the Owls with double-digit kills. Taylor Johnson led the Owls in hitting percentage with a minimum of five attempts, with a .500 hitting pct and three kills.
Savannah Skopal has a team-high 22 assists, with Kaia Mateo posting 16 to register 38 of the Owls' 46 assists. Nia McCardell had three, and both Darby Harris and Hill posted two.
The Owls finished the nine blocks on the night, highlighted by Kaitlyn Knobbe's four blocks. Lademi Pgunlana and Tchouangwa both posted three, and the trip of Thea Carter, Hill, and Jensen all had two each.
