Rice Volleyball Defeats Georgia State

MOBILE, Ala. — Rice volleyball defeated Georgia State 3-1 on Saturday at Jaguar Gym in Mobile, Alabama.
The Owls dropped the first set before winning the final three, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22. The match featured 49 tied scores and 19 lead changes. Rice hit .213 as a team and totaled 53 kills.
Kellen Dorotik led the Owls with 15 kills, while Sydnee Peterson and Ashlyn Seay added 10 each. Kaia Mateo recorded 47 assists, and Jordan Hummel led Rice with 20 digs.
Arissa Smith posted a team-best .389 hitting percentage, followed by Dorotik at .367.

Today we faced another tough competitor and were fortunate to come out on the winning side. We played a little less freely than we did last night, but still had some key performances. Kellen and Arissa provided consistency offensively, and Jordan was all over the court defensively. We'll focus on recovery next so we can be ready for Mississippi State tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The opening set featured 15 tied scores, but Georgia State maintained the lead for most of the frame. Rice battled to stay within striking distance but was held to a .105 hitting percentage. The Owls fought off set point before Georgia State closed out the opening frame, 25-20.
Second Set
Rice responded quickly in the second set, using a 3-0 run to tie the score at 13-13 and force a Georgia State timeout. The stoppage did little to slow the Owls, who extended their run to 5-0 to take a 15-13 lead. Rice later used another 5-0 run to extend its advantage to 22-17. A block by Peterson and Stephanie Gutierrez capped a 3-0 run to close the set and even the match at one set apiece, 25-18.
Third Set
Rice took an early lead in the third set before Georgia State used a 4-0 run to take a 5-4 advantage. The Owls were the first team to reach 15 points on a kill by Mateo. The teams continued to trade points, with 19 tied scores in the set, before Rice pulled away with a 3-0 run. Seay closed out the set with a kill down the back line, giving the Owls a 25-23 victory and a 2-1 match lead.
Fourth Set
The fourth set followed the same tightly contested pattern, with Georgia State taking an early 5-2 lead. Rice quickly erased the deficit and took control, becoming the first team to reach 20 points with a 20-18 advantage. Mateo then sealed the match with an ace as the Owls claimed the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
