EUGENE – The Rice women's track and field team concluded a historic season at the 2024 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing the season with a 21st-place showing.
Alice Taylor finished ninth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.87m in her first trip to the NCAA Championships. Taylor earned Second Team All-American honors.
In the heptathlon, Eliza Kraule used four personal bests (100m hurdles, 200m, javelin, 800m) to finish 20th with 5,529 points, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors.
Her mark of 13.60m in the 100m hurdles moves Kraule into fourth all-time at Rice.
Overall, the Owls finished 21st in the nation with 14 points, which were collected on Thursday with a second-place finish from Tara Simpson-Sullivan and a third-place finish from Mckyla Van der Westhuizen.
The finish is Rice's best since 2021, when Rice tied for 21st with 13 points. The Owls' 14 points this year are the most points scored since 2001 when Rice scored 26.
Post-Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jim Bevan
"Both Alice and Eliza competed, I thought, exceptionally well. Your first trip to the NCAA Championship is an incredible experience and will benefit them both for the future. It was the best high jump in the history of the NCAA; the quality and depth was like nothing we have ever seen. To jump 1.87m and not score tells you about the quality of this year's event. Alice was a Second Team All-American and Eliza was a Honorable Mention All-American, after being a First Team All-American at indoors.
In the last four years, we've had four athletes score in the top three, Michelle Fokam, Grace Forbes, and now Tara Simpson-Sullivan and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen. We are on the examples of getting a great education while being able to compete at a high level.
This year was a great season and we are looking forward to a great 2024-25 season."
