WACO – Rice women's track and field all-time great Claudia Haywood Minor will be inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame Class of 2024, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced.
"Claudia was a great competitor and a tremendous athlete," said Rice women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan "She worked hard and improved in her career to become a National Champion. She loved to compete and improved from a 38-foot jumper in high school to a 45-6 jumper in college. This is a testament to her determination, hard work and tremendous desire to compete. In her final year, she not only won the NCAA Championship, but also defeated a now 12-time USA champion to win the USA triple jump title in 1993. Claudia was incredible for us and so deserving of this honor."
Haywood Minor, a 1993 Rice graduate, is one of nine female track athletes at Rice to win an NCAA Championship title, doing so in the triple jump at the 1993 championship meet.
Her lustrous career with the Owls also includes five conference titles (four triple jump titles and one long jump title) and four All-American honors.
Haywood Minor went on to claim the 1993 USA Outdoor Championship in the triple jump, defeating the then-defending champion and now 12-time US triple jump champion, Sheila Hudson.
She was the 1993 Joyce Pounds Hardy Award winner, awarded to the most outstanding female athlete at Rice, and was also named the Eva Jean Lee Award winner, presented to the most outstanding women's track athlete, three times. Haywood Minor was inducted into the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
Her school record in the triple jump stood for 28 years before being broken in 2021 by Michelle Fokam. Currently, Haywood Minor's mark of 13.57m in the triple jump ranks second all-time.
She was also the school record holder in the long jump and still ranks within the top marks at eighth all-time.
The SWC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Luncheon will be held at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, Texas on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. Individual tickets start at $75 with table ticket options also available. To purchase tickets, visit tshof.org/swc or call 254-756-1633.
