
Women’s Track & Field has Five Named CSC Academic All-District

HOUSTON – Rice women's track and field athletes Amelie Attenborough, Kennedy Gamble, Savannah Simms, Josie Taylor and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen have been named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced.
Attenborough, a sophomore from Guildford, UK, currently holds a 3.96 GPA with a double major in bioscience and kinesiology. She earned her first All-District honor and was a C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Academic Media honoree last season. She is a three-time All-Conference honoree and finished second in the mile at the AAC Indoor Championships. At the outdoor meet, she placed sixth in both the 800m and the 1500m. At the 2023 C-USA Indoor meet, Attenborough was on the event-winning DMR team for the Owls.
Gamble, a graduate student from Houston, Texas, finished her MBA with a 3.65 GPA. She was named to the 2022-23 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Gamble is a four-time All-Conference honoree, placing third in the 100m at the AAC Outdoor and third in the 60m at the AAC Indoor meet this season. She is the school record holder for the indoor 60m dash and is second all-time in outdoors for the 100m and fourth for the 200m. Gamble qualified for the NCAA West Prelims this season in the 100m and last season in the 100m and the 200m.
Simms, a junior from Morrow, Ga., is a history major and holds a 3.69 GPA. She is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and a 2023 USTFCCCA All-Academic. Simms is a five-time All-Conference honoree, being part of Rice's event-winning DMR team at the 2023 C-USA Indoor Championships. This season, Simms finished third in the triple jump and seventh in the 4x400m at the AAC indoor meet and second in the triple jump and fourth in the 400m hurdles at the AAC outdoor meet. She finished 38th in the triple jump at the NCAA West Prelims.
Taylor, a junior from Cambridge, New Zealand, currently holds a 3.69 GPA with a major in earth environment and planetary sciences. A two-time CSC All-District honoree, Taylor has also been a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic. She is a two-time conference champion in the high jump (2024 AAC outdoor, 2022 C-USA indoor) and a five-time All-Conference honoree. Taylor qualified for her third NCAA West Prelim this season, finishing 14th, and placed eighth at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Van der Westhuizen, a sophomore from Gauteng, South Africa, currently holds a 3.70 GPA, majoring in sports medicine and exercise physiology. She was named to the 2023 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and earned a C-USA Academic Medal, while also being named a 2023 USTFCCA All-Academic. Van der Westhuizen earned her first conference title this season at the 2024 AAC Outdoor Championships in the javelin and her second All-Conference honor. She placed third in the nation in the javelin with a personal best throw at the 2024 NCAA Championships earlier this month.
