HOUSTON – After a tremendous outdoor season with Rice women's track and field, Brek Christensen earned regional honors, being named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Assistant Coach of the Year.
"We are so fortunate to have Brek working with our throwers and our team," said Rice women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan. "He's a great technical coach and a great coach of people. He really gets Rice and gets our team. This is a well-deserved honor and a well-deserved congratulations to Brek."
Christensen's throwers accounted for all 14 points at the 2024 NCAA DI Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with Tara Simpson-Sullivan placing second in the hammer throw and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen finishing third in the javelin.
Both Simpson-Sullivan and Van der Westhuizen had personal best throws at the NCAA Championships, with Simpson-Sullivan breaking her own school record and the AAC record.
The 14 points secured a top 25 finish nationally for the Owls, placing 21st as a team. The finish was Rice's best since 2021, when Rice tied for 21st with 13 points. The Owls' 14 points this year are the most points scored since 2001 when Rice scored 26.
At the 2024 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, Christensen had four athletes score points on the women's side, with Simpson-Sullivan and Van der Westhuizen also securing conference titles.
