SAN ANTONIO – The Rice women's track and field team continued to shine at the AAC Championships, claiming another event title and adding five additional point scorers at day two of the competition. The Owls currently sit second as a team.
Eliza Kraule was crowned champion of the heptathlon, sweeping the pent/hept for the AAC this season and setting a school and conference meet record with 5,774 points scored. Alice Taylor also grabbed points with a sixth-place finish.
Kraule followed up that performance with a fifth-place finish in the long jump. She just missed the cut for finals by .03 of a second in the 100m hurdles. Kraule will compete in one more event tomorrow for the high jump.
Katlyn Schmeltzer finished the night for the women's competition with a fifth-place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase. Morgan Fey also finished the night with points, taking seventh in the shot put.
Over in the prelims, Taigen Hunter-Galvan and Amelie Attenborough advanced once again to the finals, this time in the 800m. Kennedy Gamble also advanced to the finals of the 100m.
Day One Reaction - Head Coach Jim Bevan
"Day two was another great day. Highlighted by Eliza Kraule's conference meet record and school record in the heptathlon with 5,774 points. Then she continued to impress, coming back on a sixth-round long jump mark of 6.02m, which moved her up spots into fifth. Alice Taylor was extremely impressive, with a lifetime best in the hept, with three important points. And for me, I was overly impressed with her courage to go and lead the 800m for 600 of those meters for her fastest time by six seconds. We were fortunate to advance Kennedy Gamble in the 100m (running into a 1.1m headwind). We also advanced two in the 800m, Taigen and Amelie. We also scored two very important points from Morgan Fey in the shot put. The evening closed with a fine performance in the steeplechase by Katlyn Schmeltzer (seeded sixth and finishing fifth). We look forward to an outstanding day of competition tomorrow. The meet will go event by event with a three-team battle for the conference championship. It will be exciting and we will bring our very best tomorrow."
