HOUSTON — Rice men's basketball coach Rob Lanier has announced Monday afternoon the signing of Aaron Powell (Los Angeles, Calif.) to a national letter of intent for the 2024-25 school year.
Powell, a 6-1 guard, played for Head Coach David Grace at Campell Hall High School. Last year, he averaged 18.2 points per game on his way to being named Division 2AA All-CIFSS. As a junior, he averaged 17.2 points, 3.9 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals. He scored double-figures in 24 of 25 games and connected on 81.5% from the free throw line.
A three-time First Team Gold Coast member, he was selected to the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the Junior USA Camp. Powell is rated a four-star by ESPN and three-star by 247sports.com.
Said Lanier, ""Aaron has the ball skills along with the shooting ability, speed and athleticism that fit our style of play. He's grown up around the highest level of basketball so we don't expect him to be overwhelmed by the transition to the college game."
Powell joins guard/forward Kellen Amos (Houston, Texas/Central Connecticut State), guards Denver Anglin (Montclair, N.J./SMU), Anthony Baston, Jr. (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and Trae Broadnax (Savannah, Ga./USC Upstate) and forward Trey Patterson (Somerset, N.J./Villanova) in the 2024-25 recruiting class.
