
Men's Tennis Posts 5-2 Win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California — Rice men's tennis capped off its California road trip with a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly on Thursday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
Doubles: The second and third positions powered the Owls to the doubles point and the early lead in the match. Juniors Arthus de la Bassetiere and Eduardo Morais posted a 6-3 victory at the third spot. At the second spot, senior Trinity Grear and freshman Petro Kuzmenok combined for the 6-4 win to clinch the point for Rice. At the No. 1s, senior Yasha Zemel and sophomore Kabeer Kapasi were tied at 6-6 when the match was suspended.
Singles: Singles play turned into a battle as four matches went a full three sets. After the Mustangs tied the match with a victory at the first position, Kapasi kicked off a streak of four consecutive points for the Owls with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the sixth position. De la Bassetiere fought back after dropping the first set to dominate the ensuing two for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 victory at the third position. At the No. 5s, Kuzmenok clinched with a victory for Rice, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, before Grear outlasted his competition to push the Owls to five points with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory at the second position.
