Swimming Primed for Sterkel Classic

HOUSTON, Texas — Rice swimming is set to compete this weekend at the Sterkel Classic in Austin, Texas. The Owls will compete in the meet against Texas and TCU. The competition will be Rice's final showing before the AAC Championships on Feb. 22-24 in Dallas.
The Sterkel Classic will take place at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin at noon on Saturday, Feb. 3. Live results for the meet will be provided through Texas athletics. Texas is currently ranked second in the nation according to the latest CSCAA rankings.
Last weekend, the Owls competed in a pair of meets, taking on Houston and Miami at the CRWC Natatorium on Friday, before returning home to host Miami on Saturday as a part of Senior Day. Rice posted four victories in individual events during the weekend. Freshman Siiri Einio won both the 50- and 150-yard breaststroke events on Saturday with respective times of 29.06 and 1:42.55. Junior Arielle Hayon posted Rice's third victory of Saturday, winning the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.52. Hayon also won the 200-yard individual medley against both Miami and Houston on Friday with a time of 2:02.07.
Six Rice swimmers currently rank in the top-three of the AAC this season in a total of 16 events, with graduate senior Shannon Campbell (500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle) and senior Imogen Meers (100-yard backstroke) each ranking atop the conference. The Owls also rank in the top-three in the AAC this season in the 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays.
