Women's Tennis Opens Rice Invite with Five Victories

HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's tennis team opened the Rice Invitational on Friday, earning five victories on the day.

After a long rain delay to open the Invitational, the day began with doubles competitions, where Rice earned two victories. The tandem of Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez defeated the duo of Cristina Ramos Sierra and Maria de la Paz Alberto from Iowa State, 6-1, followed by Saara Orav and Nithesa Selvaraj taking down Kenna Erickson and Indi Patel from LSU, 6-1.

In singles competition, Schwartzman opened up the afternoon by taking down Houston's Elizaveta Morozova, 6-0, 6-1, to claim her second individual victory of the day. Selvaraj did the same in the singles competition with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Oklahoma's Emma Ghirardato. Finally, Valentina Ponce collected the final Rice victory of the day, taking down UTRGV's Hitakamya Narwal Singh, 6-4, 7-5.

The Rice Invitational continues on Saturday from South Main.
