Rice Drops Regular Season Finale to ECU
10/31/2024 8:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
GREENVILLE – The Rice soccer team rallied late but ultimately fell short on the road to East Carolina 2-1 in the regular season finale Thursday night. Rice falls to 11-5-2 (5-4-1 AAC) and will enter the AAC Tournament as either the fourth or fifth seed (will face the other seed next Monday in the quarterfinals).
How It Happened
The two sides traded possessions early, with Jules Johnston firing a shot with the Pirate keeper making the save 15 minutes into the match. Four minutes later, a video replay awarded ECU a penalty kick, which the Pirates scored on to take the lead. Leah Chancey sparked the offense by rattling off several shots, with the Owls starting to find a groove offensively, but Rice headed into the half scoreless, still trailing 1-0.
After the two offenses went silent for the opening third of the second half, East Carolina struck for its second goal in the 59th minute. Mikala Furuto looked to cut the deficit in half shortly after, but her shot couldn't get past the ECU defense. With under 10 minutes to go, Rice got on the board off of Lauren Pickup's first career goal, set up by Kat Lazor's free kick. A minute later, Allie Love sent a shot in the box, but a leaping save by the ECU keeper kept the deficit at one. Time would not favor the Owls as the ECU held on for the 2-1 victory to close the regular season.
