Bloomgren Named to AFCA Board

Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren is one of five head coaches who have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in voting on Monday by members attending the 2024 AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
Bloomgren joins Clark Lea of Vanderbilt, Jay Norvell of Colorado State, Jason Simpson of Tennessee Martin and Alvin Parker of Virginia Union as new members of the board and will represent the American Athletic Conference.
The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman, and others. Returning members of the AFCA Board of Trustees include incoming president Jeff McMartin of Central College, first vice-president Bobby Hauck of the University of Montana, second vice-president Neal Brown of West Virginia University, and third vice-president Jim Catanzaro of Lake Forest College..
Bloomgren finished his sixth season as the head coach at Rice with a second-consecutive bowl appearance in the Owls' inaugural season in the AAC. The appearance in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl marked only the third time in school history Rice has appeared in bowl games in consecutive seasons. Rice won the most games under Bloomgren in 2023, going 6-7 while scoring the fourth-most points in school history (384) and throwing for 3,282 yards (also fourth-best in school history).
Also serving on the Board in 2024 are: Steve Ryan, Morningside University; James Franklin, Penn State University; Dave Clawson, Wake Forest University; Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw State University; Mike MacIntyre, Florida International University; Maurice Linguist, University at Buffalo; Kane Wommack, University of South Alabama; Mike Babcock, McKendree University; Randy Bates, University of Pittsburgh; ex officio member and chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee; Van Malone, Kansas State University, ex officio member and chairman of the Minority Advancement Committee; Michael Christensen, Carson (Calif.) High School, ex officio member and chairman of the High School Committee; and Scott Strohmeier, Iowa Western Community College, ex officio member and Junior College representative.
AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl serves as secretary-treasurer of the organization.
