
17 Owls Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Rice men's and women's track and field teams combined to qualify 17 student-athletes for the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic teams, an award that honors those who excel both in meets and in the classroom, the organization announced.
Both men's and women's teams also were recognized for the Team Academic Awards in addition to the individual awards. Under head coach Jim Bevan, the Rice women posted a 3.602 GPA while the men's team under head coach Jon Warren posted a 3.55 GPA.
In order to qualify for team recognition a program must finish with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 GPA.
This year's Rice honorees on the women's team are Alyssa Balandran (Psychology/Visiting Post Bac), Kennedy Gamble (MBA), Erna Gunnarsdottir (Masters of Global Affairs), Eliza Kraule (Computer Science), Ginnie Okafor (Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology), Savannah Simms (History), Tara Simpson-Sullivan (Sports Management), Josie Taylor (Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences) and Mckyla Van der Westhuizen (undecided).
The Rice men receiving recognition are Cal Abdulky (Business), Ese Amata (Sports Management), Corbett Fong (Mechanical Engineering), Shaun Kerry (Neuroscience), Grant Levesque (Sports Management), Alexander Slinkman (Visual and Dramatic Arts), Sam Welsh (Data Science) and Samuel Woodley (German Studies).
