HOUSTON – Rice jumped in front early before fending off a second-half rally by Texas Southern, ultimately winning 5-2 for the team's first win of the 2023 season. Two Owls scored twice in the match, with Mia Brumlow and Kallie McKinney both recording braces.

How It Happened
Rice got on the board quick, with Brumlow scoring her first career goal and the first goal of the season for the Owls off a pass from Natalie Gorji. Ellen Halseth's corner kick later found McKinney, who found the back of the net for her first career goal to give Rice a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes left in the half. Halseth added another goal for Rice with just over 10 minutes left in the half to give the Owls a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
TSU got right back in the match, scoring two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to cut the deficit down to one at 3-2. The Owls answered back with McKinney netting her second goal of the game off a pass from Naija Bruckner with just over 20 minutes left in the match. Brumlow later capped off the night by adding her second goal of the game off passes from Sarah Piper and McKinney, giving the Owls the 5-2 victory.
