SACRAMENTO – The Rice women's track and field team closed their stay at the NCAA West Prelims with several strong performances, including Josie Taylor setting a new school record in high jump.
Taylor cleared 1.82m (5-11.75) to just snap the 33-year school record set by Sonya Henry in 1990 (1.81m). The mark put Taylor just short of advancing to the NCAA Championships after finishing in 13th due to tiebreakers.
The Owls had three athletes advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin with Tara Simpson-Sullivan (hammer throw, fourth place), Mckyla Van der Westhuizen (javelin, seventh place) and Erna Gunnarsdottir (shot put, twelfth place) all clinching spots.
In order to advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin athletes have to finish within the top 12 in the east and west prelims (24 advance total).
