
Owls Open C-USA Championships with Three Event Titles

DENTON – The Rice women's track and field team swept the opening three events at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships in Denton, Texas and sit in the top spot overall as a team through three of the 21 events.
Tara Simpson-Sullivan claimed the opening event of the weekend with her third-straight hammer throw title while Julie Perez had her best throw in two years to add additional points for the Owls with a sixth-place finish.
Eliza Kraule and Lindsay Simms followed up their fast start yesterday by taking the top two spots of the heptathlon with Kraule's 5501 points setting a Rice record and Simms' 5214 points finishing fourth on the Rice all-time record list.
Caitlin Wosika capped the night off with fireworks as she turned on the jets in the final two laps to win the 10,000 meter, securing the 3-for-3 sweep of events on the day for the Owls. Lina Spjut was also able to grab a crucial point for the Owls with an eighth-place finish.
